UPDATED MON, JULY 25 2023
On Monday, Elon Musk and Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino revealed a new logo for the social media platform, featuring a white X on a black background. Yaccarino took to Twitter to announce the change, tweeting "X is here! Let's do this," and sharing a picture of the logo projected onto the company's San Francisco offices.
However, not everyone was pleased with the new design, as the hashtag "#GoodbyeTwitter" trended on the platform, with some users expressing their dissatisfaction with the replacement of the familiar blue bird symbol. Musk had previously announced his intention to change Twitter's logo and polled his millions of followers on whether they would prefer a colour scheme change from blue to black. He shared a stylised X against a black outer space-themed background, referring to it as the "interim X logo." He also tweeted, "soon we shall bid adieu to the Twitter brand and, gradually, all the birds."

Continue to read The original Twitter logo was created in 2012 by a team of three designers, with Martin Grasser, one of the designers, tweeting that "the logo was designed to be simple, balanced, and legible at very small sizes, almost like a lowercase 'e'." In the wake of Twitter's takeover, the company has been through a series of challenges, including staff lay-offs, a significant decline in advertisers, and the emergence of Threads, which is Meta's answer to Twitter. According to Drew Benvie, CEO of social media consultancy Battenhall, "The last few months have been tumultuous at Twitter, and I don't think a new brand is going to solve everything." Benvie added, "This is less about reinventing Twitter, and more about building a brand around Elon Musk's empire, including SpaceX, where the X branding really connects a little more closely."
As Twitter continues to navigate these turbulent times, it remains to be seen whether the new logo will have a significant impact on the company's fortunes. However, it is clear that Musk's influence is being felt, and the X branding represents a bold step towards a new era for the social media giant.
