凌晨4時30分，北大嶼山公路往機場方向，近東薈城發生交通意外，一名司機死亡，一人受傷。事發時兩架貨車正沿慢線行駛，突然隨後貨車撞倒前車，其後失控滑行至快線停下。兩車撞擊後一部的士沿路疑收掣不及，直撞向貨車車尾。
的士撞向貨車後車頭首先起火，並燒着貨車上貨物，引起大火。消防接報到場開喉灌救，39歲姓何的士司機，被困車內當場被活活燒死，遺體其後由消防員抬出放置在路中，而貨車司機受輕傷送院。
一名事發時行經現場64歲姓江的士司機歲向記者表示，事發時於尖沙咀載客到機場，途經事發現場，見前方一輪貨車停在快線，並無亮著死火燈並停泊於路中，環境黑暗再加上當時下微雨，於是收慢車速並切入中線。其後發覺車軚被刺穿，相隔不足一分鐘聽到一聲爆炸聲響，並有一輛的士直撞貨車車尾起火。
受車禍影響現場全線封閉進行調查，東薈城往機場方向全線封閉，而車禍起因有待警方跟進。
A taxi driver died and another person was injured in a fatal traffic accident on North Lantau Expressway early this morning.
The accident occurred around 4:30 am on the expressway towards the airport, near Citygate Outlets. Two trucks were driving along the slow lane when one truck suddenly hit the vehicle in front of it and skidded onto the fast lane before stopping, police said.
After the collision, a taxi apparently failed to brake in time and crashed into the rear of the stationary truck. The impact caused a fire that engulfed the truck and its cargo.
The 64-year-old taxi driver was trapped in the vehicle and burnt alive. Firefighters reached the scene quickly and used a crane to rescue him, but he was already dead. His remains were removed from the road. The truck driver suffered minor injuries and was sent to the hospital.
A 64-year-old taxi driver told reporters he was carrying passengers from Tsim Sha Tsui to the airport when he passed the accident site. He saw a truck stopped on the fast lane without hazard lights and parked in the middle of the road under poor visibility. He slowed down and changed lanes. Shortly after, he felt his tires burst and heard an explosion seconds before his taxi ploughed into the truck, igniting a fire.
The police have cordoned off the accident site for investigation. Traffic on the expressway towards the airport has been suspended. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
