A group of construction workers staged a dangerous protest in Causeway Bay's Hing Fat Street on April 14th, suspecting that they had not been paid their wages. Six workers went to a building under renovation at 40-42 Hing Fat Street to demand their unpaid wages. One worker climbed to the edge of the building's rooftop, while the other five held up signs reading "Unscrupulous Construction" and "No salary despite sweating."
The Fire Services Department arrived at the scene and deployed safety cushions, causing Hing Fat Street to be temporarily closed. Firefighters went to the rooftop to persuade the workers to come down. The workers' foreman, surnamed Lam, said that the Venetian Garden scaffolding project had been paying wages on time, but had not paid the workers from October to December last year. It is reported that 20 other workers were also owed wages, totalling up to millions of Hong Kong dollars.
After about an hour of chaos, the firefighters brought the workers to safety, and the road was reopened. However, the dispute between the workers and their employer remains unresolved, and the workers are discussing their next steps to demand their unpaid wages. The incident highlights the ongoing issue of wage disputes in the construction industry in Hong Kong.
